Covent Garden

  Dear Diary,

I wish you were part of my homework so as to spend more time with you, but you aren`t... So, after five whole days reminiscing about the last days in London while composing my essay at the same time, it`s time for me to start writing straight ahead. Do you remember that I went to Covent Garden but it was raining and I couldn`t enjoy myself there? Well, I went there for a second visit cause the weather was sunny and hot, a perfect match for a perfect walk. Due to my previous short wander, I didn`t say much about the place. So, open your ears-in this case, your eyes- and listen/read carefully...

The focus on Covent Garden is the elegant Piazza. You can still see more traces of the original Georgian architecture, through the covered market in the middle is Victorian and is now home to fashion and gift boutiques. Every day of the week, you`ll find market stalls selling one-off jewellery, crafts and antiques, while the streets around the Piazza are full of trendy shores. Visit the Apple Market for British hand-made arts, crafts & antiques, plus the Jubilee & East Colonnade Markets for a huge variety of stalls.

Are you fancy having your breakfast in the French way? Le pain quotidian is the place you are looking for.

How about lunching in the Spanish way? Paella looks so tasty, doesn`t it?

Are you an opera addict? Listen to this lady standing near the corner whose loud and high voice grasped my attention and listened to her  for almost a quarter enjoying every single minute of it. At first place, I thought it was music from a store there, but gotsurprised that it was real! Every single day, there is another street artist who keeps you amused so spend some time there cause it`s well worth it.

That`s for now guys! See you soon,
Cheers*
Litsiana K.

Trafalgar square

Dear Diary,

Did you miss me? Sorry for not writing to you yesterday but I was really busy; I was all day at uni and afterwards I was studying till late at night. Pffff, but today is my dynamic comeback cause I want to show you a very beautiful square; Trafalgar square. There, I went on 9th October. I know, I`m one week behind but I`m trying to catch up.

Trafalgar Square is a public space and tourist attraction in central London, built around the area formerly known as Charing Cross and it`s  in the borough of the City of Westminster. At its centre is Nelson's Column, which is guarded by four lion statues at its base. There are a number of statues and sculptures in the square, with one plinth displaying changing pieces of contemporary art. The square is also used for political demonstrations and community gatherings, such as the celebration of New Year's Eve.

The name commemorates the Battle of Trafalgar (1805), a British naval victory of the Napoleonic Wars over France. The original name was to have been "King William the Fourth's Square", but George Ledwell Taylor suggested the name "Trafalgar Square".In the 1820s, George IV engaged the architect John Nash to redevelop the area but he present architecture of the square is due to SirCharles Barry and was completed in 1845.Trafalgar Square is owned by the Queen in Right of the Crown, and managed by the Greater London Authority, while Westminster City Council owns the roads around the square.

When the square was laid out in the 1840s, the fountains' primary purpose was not aesthetic, but rather to reduce the open space available and the risk of riotous assembly.

Before reaching Trafalgar Square, I made a few pit stops. Pit stop 1: King`s road posing next to a fountain.

Pit stop 2: I caught bus 137 and went straight to Oxford Street.

Pit stop 3: From Oxford to Regent Street and from there heading to Trafalgar Square.  Apart from the traditional red telephone booth, look at this black one that matches with my dark lipstick.

Enjoy guys.
Goodnight!
Litsiana K.

Disney Store and St. Christopher`s place

 Dear Diary,

Do you remember the Disney Store in Covent Garden? Well, there is another one in Oxford Street! Yiiiiiiha... Time to be a kid once again. That sunny Saturday morning found me in the store with my classmate Maria, exploring the Disney World, posing next to giant cuddly Disney toys  and wishing to be young again so as to buy some of this amazing stuff. We took some pics and left the store with empty hands. Pffff..... Have a look:

More or less, Saturday was spent wandering around the Oxford Street and doing window shopping.

The following Saturday found me in St. Christopher`s place. Look out for the landmark  purple clock as heading down Oxford Street and you`ll suddenly discover the entrance to St. Christopher Place-home to an eclectic mix of shops boutiques, restaurants and bars;  for example  if you want a tasty coffee or any kind of beverages go to "Apostrophe". Fancy eating a pizza? "Express Pizza" is there. Are you in a rush? Grasp a sandwich from "Pret a mager",to name but a few guys Matina, another colleague  of mine, and I went there for a hot cup of cupuccino. The place is well worth visiting. . Go there and decide yourselves where to have a seat and have fun!

Need to go now. Talk to you pretty soon.

London Bridge

Dear Diary,

Today, it was raining all day long so it was the perfect one for me to study, take care of the house and of course spend some time updating my Diary. Well, on 19th September I took the underground and went to London Bridge. What a beautiful place guys! As I was coming out of the station, the Shard grasp my attention. What is the Shard?

The Shard, also referred as the Shard of glass or Shard London Bridge is an 87-storey skyscraper in London that forms part of the London Bridge Quarter development. The Shard's construction began in March 2009; it was topped out on 30 March 2012  and inaugurated on 5 July 2012.Practical completion was achieved in November 2012. Its privately operated observation deck, the View from the Shard, opened to the public on 1 February 2013. Standing approximately 306 metres (1,004 ft) high, the Shard is currently the tallest building in the European Union. It is the second-tallest free-standing structure in the United Kingdom, after the concrete tower at the Emley Moor transmitting station.  It was designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano, and replaced Southwark Towers, a 24-storey office block built on the site in Southwark in 1975.

Another magnificent building is City Hall.City Hall is the headquarters of the Greater London Authority (GLA) which comprises the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. It is located in Southwark, on the south bank of the River Thames near Tower Bridge. It was designed by Norman Foster and opened in July 2002, two years after the Greater London Authority was created.

Facts about LONDON BRIDGE

1.       London Bridge does not have towers. Tower Bridge does! (Tower Bridge is the famous one in all the photos.)
2.      There have been three London Bridges.
3.      The first London Bridge was built 1209-1831 It contained houses and shops.
4.      The second by John Rennie, built to replace the original, lasted until 1968, when it was sold to an American entrepreneur.
5.      The current London Bridge was opened in 1977
6.      Tower Bridge is the most recognisable bridge on the River Thames and is often mistakenly referred to as “London Bridge”.
7.      Tower Bridge has stood over the River Thames in London since 1894
8.     The total cost of construction was £1, 184,000.
9.      The bridge was officially opened on 30 June 1894 by The Prince of Wales (the future King Edward Vll) and his wife, The Princess of Wales.
10.  It takes 61 seconds to open Tower Bridge, which opens about 1,000 times a year.
11.   Tower Bridge is the only bridge over the Thames that can be raised as it is a combined bascule (drawbridge) and suspension bridge. This means that the middle section of the bridge can be raised to allow river traffic to pass through.

12.  The bridge was originally painted a chocolate brown colour. Then in 1977, it was painted red, white and blue for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.

   That`s all for now,
         Cheers*

Telephone Booth

Dear Diary,

Well, well. The first days were spent between chores like housework
and going to the market. BUT on  the 15th September I pulled myself out of the house and went to Covent Garden to meet an old friend of mine. The weather was rainy and windy so I just took a couple of pics in frond of a red traditional telephone booth and went straight to have a hot cup of tea!

Due to the heavy rain, I didn`t  wander around as much as I wanted. But I bumped into the Disney Store. How about visiting it? What`s a Disney Store? It`s a well known store selling Disney inspired toys, clothes and collectibles for all ages. Mickey, Minnie, Disney Princesses and much more star there, just have a look at the window and enjoy shopping!

Write to you tomorrow,
Kisses*
